Jozef De Beenhouwer

(born on 26th March 1948)

Jozef De Beenhouwer

After graduating in pharmacology (Leuven, 1970), the Schumann Prize winner Jozef de Beenhouwer devoted himself to music exclusively. Having been a student of Lode Backx at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel (Brussels) and the Royal Flemish Conservatoire of Antwerp, he passed the final examination in piano with mention summa cum laude in 1975. In the 1990s, he perfected himself by studying interpretation with David Kimball in Florence.

De Beenhouwer performed at recitals and as a soloist with orchestras in most European countries, the USA and South Korea.

He is a member of the Robert Schumann Trio and often plays at song recitals with renowned singers, such as Ria Bollen, Robert Holl, Nina Stemme and Werner van Mechelen.

In 1986, he gave the premiere of Robert Schumann’s Concert Piece (1849) together with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, followed in 1992 by the premiere of Clara Schumann’s Concert Piece composed in 1847. Both works, left by the composers in the form of fragments only, were complemented by the pianist and thus made available to concert audiences and published by Breitkopf und Härtel.

Several records and CDs with Jozef De Beenhouwer have been released (inter alia, 20 CDs by label Phaedra: works by Schumann, Brahms and Belgian composers). He was twice awarded the Caecilia Prize for his recordings of the piano works of Peter Benoits and Joseph Ryelandts.

In 1991, he made the first complete recording of Clara Schumann’s piano compositions on three CDs (CPO).

In 1993, he was awarded the Robert Schumann Prize of the town of Zwickau for his special achievements regarding the works of Robert and Clara Schumann.

Jozef De Beenhouwer currently is a professor at the Royal Flemish Conservatoire of Antwerp and is the Artistic Director of the Brussels Lunchtime Concerts. He is also often in demand as a juror at international piano competitions.
